YMCA Volleyball Rules 12-14
Playing Time
• Every player should get equal playtime in each match.
• Players can still play in a match even if they missed a practice, though attendance is
encouraged.

Number of Players
• Games are 6-on-6, but teams can play with 5 if necessary.
• If a team has fewer than 5 players, they may borrow players from the other team.

Equipment
• Players must wear a YMCA team shirt and non-marking tennis shoes, and knee pads.

Court Requirements
• Net height: 7 feet, 6 inches.
• Officials will identify and explain any obstacles affecting play before the game.
• Regulation indoor volleyballs will be used.

Game Format
• Matches are best two out of three games. We will play all three games.
• A coin toss decides side and serve at the start and before the third game.
• First two games are played to 25 points (win by 2, no cap), third game to 21 points (win
by 2, cap at 25).
• Rally scoring is used.
• Each team gets one 45-second timeout per game, which doesn’t carry over.
• Substitutions allowed after play stops and before the next serve.
• Warm-up time: 3-5 minutes.

Rules of the Game
Serving
• Players may serve underhand up to 10 feet in from the end line, depending on skill level.
• A player can serve a maximum of five times in a row before a side-out (no point
awarded) is given to the other team.
• Serves that hit the net are playable.
• All players should get a chance to serve; no substitutions to favor stronger servers.
• Overhand servers must let the first toss drop without penalty but must serve on the
second toss.
• Foot faults are only called after a warning.

Other Rules
• Spiking and hitting are taught with an open hand, but fist or knuckle hits are allowed.
• Players can receive serves with various techniques but cannot attack a serve.
• Double hits are not allowed.
• Net violations will be called.
• No liberos or defensive specialists; all players should rotate through front and back row.

Additional YMCA Guidelines
• Teams recite the YMCA Youth Sports Pledge before games.
• Teams should shake hands after each game.
• Coaches and parents are role models and must follow the YMCA Code of Conduct.
