YMCA Youth Basketball Rules – Updated December 2024
Boys 9/10
This is a six-team league. The first two weeks will be pre-season games. Those games will not count towards the standings. The next five-games will be the actual league games.
Based on the standings for the league games, the final week of games will be played on Saturday, March 8th, 2025.
1st vs 2nd
3rd vs 4th
5th vs 6th
The game times will be added to the schedule later.
General:
- I have updated the playing time for the following divisions: Boys 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and Girls 8-10, 11-13.
- Game Format:
- Games will consist of two 20-minute halves with a running clock.
- The clock will stop for all timeouts and injuries.
- In the last two minutes of the second half, a stop-clock will be used if the point margin is less than 10.
- Halftime:
- There will be a 3-minute halftime break.
- Overtime:
- If the score is tied at the end of regulation, a 2-minute overtime period will be played.
- Each team will be granted one timeout during the overtime period.
- A stop-clock will be used for dead balls and free throws.
- If the score remains tied after the overtime period, the game will end in a tie.
- Timeouts:
- Each team is allowed one 1-minute timeout per half. Timeouts do not carry over.
- Timeouts can be called by a coach or a player on the court when their team has clear possession of the ball or during a dead ball.
- Substitutions:
- Substitutions will occur every five minutes. The clock will continue running, so players should be ready to check in at the scorer’s table promptly.
- Free substitution is not permitted.
- Playing Time Requirements:
- Each player must play a minimum of 20 minutes per game and sit for at least 5 minutes.
- No player is allowed to play the entire game unless exceptions apply, such as injuries, a team having only five players, or a player fouling out before meeting their minimum playing time.
- Playing time will be recorded at the scorer’s table during all games.
The purpose of the 20-minute halves is to increase actual playing time for the older divisions.
- Game Format:
- Team fouls shall be recorded. AFTER the 6th team foul, any subsequent foul will result in a one and one free throw. After the 10th team foul, two free throws will be awarded. Team fouls reset at the half.
- Individual fouls shall be recorded. There will be no fouling out. The Director has the authority to implement fouling out if games are becoming “foul heavy” or unsafe. In addition, if a player is out of control and a safety risk to other players, the officials have the authority to remove the player from the game.
- Each team is required to have one volunteer report to the referees 5 minutes prior to game time to assist in scorekeeping or timing.
- For the game to be played, a team must field a minimum of 3 players, max of 5 players.
- Only one coach standing on sideline and must stay on their designated half of the court.
- Baskets will be 9′ and an intermediate size ball (28.5”) will be used.
Offense:
- The offensive team shall bring the ball into the front court within 10 seconds.
- There will be a 3-second lane violation.
- There will be backcourt violations (over and back).
- Free throws will result in the case of a shooting foul. All players may enter the key once the ball leaves the shooters hands. Only the shooter must wait for the ball to make contact with the rim. If no contact is made, the play is dead, and ball turned over to the opposing team.
- All violations will result in loss of possession.
Defense:
- Defense can full court press in the second half only, unless up by 10 pts then they must pick up at half court.
- Steals are permitted.

Games for boys 9–10-year-olds will be played at the Solvang School on Saturdays.
Do I need to be a member for my child to participate?
No, our league is open to any child, members and non-members alike. However, we will need to ensure that you have a waiver on file. Please be prepared to fill one out if you are not a member.
Does my child need prior basketball experience to play?
No, our league is for both beginners and skilled athletes.
Does my child receive a jersey for the program?
You will need to purchase a reversible jersey for $13 from Augusta Sportswear. This way you get the exact size shirt you want. If you have a basketball jersey from last season, you do not need to purchase a new jersey this season.
When and where do I find out what team my child is on?
You will receive a phone call or email from your coach once a person has volunteered to coach. You should hear no later than Sunday, January 7, 2024.
What time is my child’s game at?
Schedules will be posted on YGAMETIME prior to January 8th, 2025. We will send out an alert once the schedules are posted. Sign-up for YGAMETIME to access league schedules.

Please note any days you cannot practice on the registration form. We can’t guarantee to accommodate your requests, but we will try. Practice is scheduled based on the coach’s availability.
Can I request a coach, or a friend to be on my child’s team?
No, but coaches will be able to request up to one child.
(Siblings are the only exception to this rule.)
Can I coach a team?
Yes, to make this league possible, we need parents and volunteers to dedicate their time to create a fun experience for everyone. All we ask is your willingness to coach, no prior experience is necessary. Please contact Darin McClelland if interested in coaching, or volunteering in another capacity. (Fingerprinting, volunteer paperwork, concussion & child abuse prevention training required for new coaches.) All training is provided by the YMCA.
What shoes does my child need?
