Channel Islands YMCA
YMCA Youth Basketball Rules – Updated November 2024
Boys 11-12
General:
- I have updated the playing time for the following divisions: Boys 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and Girls 8-10, 11-13.
- Game Format:
- Games will consist of two 20-minute halves with a running clock.
- The clock will stop for all timeouts and injuries.
- In the last two minutes of the second half, a stop-clock will be used if the point margin is less than 10.
- Halftime:
- There will be a 3-minute halftime break.
- Overtime:
- If the score is tied at the end of regulation, a 2-minute overtime period will be played.
- Each team will be granted one timeout during the overtime period.
- A stop-clock will be used for dead balls and free throws.
- If the score remains tied after the overtime period, the game will end in a tie.
- Timeouts:
- Each team is allowed one 1-minute timeout per half. Timeouts do not carry over.
- Timeouts can be called by a coach or a player on the court when their team has clear possession of the ball or during a dead ball.
- Substitutions:
- Substitutions will occur every five minutes. The clock will continue running, so players should be ready to check in at the scorer’s table promptly.
- Free substitution is not permitted.
- Playing Time Requirements:
- Each player must play a minimum of 20 minutes per game and sit for at least 5 minutes.
- No player is allowed to play the entire game unless exceptions apply, such as injuries, a team having only five players, or a player fouling out before meeting their minimum playing time.
- Playing time will be recorded at the scorer’s table during all games.
The purpose of the 20-minute halves is to increase actual playing time for the older divisions.
- Team fouls shall be recorded. AFTER the 6th team foul, any subsequent foul will result in a one and one free throw. After the 10th team foul, two free throws will be awarded. Team fouls reset at the half.
- Individual fouls shall be recorded, and once a player reaches their 5th personal foul, they will be disqualified for the remainder of the game. The Director has the authority to implement fouling out midseason if games are becoming “foul heavy” or unsafe.
- Each team is required to have one volunteer report to the referees 10 minutes prior to game time to assist in scorekeeping or timing.
- For the game to be played; a team must field a minimum of 3 players, max of 5 players.
- Only one coach standing on sideline and must stay on their designated half of the court.
- Baskets will be 10’ and an official size ball (29.5”) will be used.
Offense:
- The offensive team shall bring the ball into the front court within 10 seconds.
- There will be a 3-second lane violation.
- There will be backcourt violations (over and back).
- Free throws will result in the case of a shooting foul. All players may enter the key once the ball has made contact with the rim. If no contact is made, the play is dead and ball turned over to the opposing team.
- All violations will result in loss of possession.
Defense:
- Defense can full court press: unless up more than 10 pts then must pick up at half court.
- Steals are permitted.
