YMCA Youth Basketball Rules – December 2024

Boys 13-14

General:

  1. I have updated the playing time for the following divisions: Boys 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and Girls 8-10, 11-13.
    • Game Format:
      • Games will consist of two 20-minute halves with a running clock.
      • The clock will stop for all timeouts and injuries.
      • In the last two minutes of the second half, a stop-clock will be used if the point margin is less than 10.
    • Halftime:
      • There will be a 3-minute halftime break.
    • Overtime:
      • If the score is tied at the end of regulation, a 2-minute overtime period will be played.
      • Each team will be granted one timeout during the overtime period.
      • A stop-clock will be used for dead balls and free throws.
      • If the score remains tied after the overtime period, the game will end in a tie.
    • Timeouts:
      • Each team is allowed one 1-minute timeout per half. Timeouts do not carry over.
      • Timeouts can be called by a coach or a player on the court when their team has clear possession of the ball or during a dead ball.
    • Substitutions:
      • Substitutions will occur every five minutes. The clock will continue running, so players should be ready to check in at the scorer’s table promptly.
      • Free substitution is not permitted.
    • Playing Time Requirements:
      • Each player must play a minimum of 20 minutes per game and sit for at least 5 minutes.
      • No player is allowed to play the entire game unless exceptions apply, such as injuries, a team having only five players, or a player fouling out before meeting their minimum playing time.
      • Playing time will be recorded at the scorer’s table during all games.

The purpose of the 20-minute halves is to increase actual playing time for the older divisions.

  2. Team fouls shall be recorded, the 7th, 8th, and 9th team foul will result in 1 and 1 free throws. The 10th+ team foul will result in 2 free throw shots.
  3. Individual fouls shall be recorded, and a player will foul out on their 6th personal foul.
  4. Each team is required to have one volunteer report to the scorer’s table 5 minutes prior to game time to assist in scorekeeping or timing.
  5. Only one coach standing on sideline and must stay on their designated half of the court.
  6. Baskets will be at 10’ and an official size ball will be used (29.5)

Offense:

  1. The offensive team shall bring the ball into the front court within 10 seconds.
  2. There will be a 3-second lane violation.
  3. Backcourt violations will be enforced when using the large courts (over and back).
  4. All players may enter the key once the ball has left the shooter’s hands except for the shooter. If no contact is made, the play is dead and ball turned over to the opposing team.
  5. All violations will result in loss of possession.

 Defense:

  1. Full court press is permitted unless up by 10 pts or more, than the defense must pick up behind the half court line.

FAQ’s

Where will practices be held?

Primarily practices are scheduled at the Stuart C. Gildred YMCA. If other gyms become available for practices, coaches may decide to use them. Practice times and locations are decided by the coach.

When are games played?

Games for younger divisions will be played at the Stuart C. Gildred Family YMCA on Saturdays.

Do I need to be a member for my child to participate?

No, our league is open to any child; members and non-members alike. However, we will need to ensure that you have a waiver on file. Please be prepared to fill one out if you are not a member.

Does my child need prior basketball experience to play?

No, our league is for both beginners and skilled athletes.

Does my child receive a jersey for the program?

You will need to purchase a reversible jersey for $13 from Augusta Sportswear. This way you get the exact size shirt you want. If you have a basketball jersey from last season, you do not need to purchase a new jersey this season.

When and where do I find out what team my child is on?

You will receive a phone call or email from your coach once a person has volunteered to coach. You should hear no later than Sunday, January 7, 2024.

What time is my child’s game at?

Schedules will be posted on YGAMETIME prior to January 8th, 2025. We will send out an alert once the schedules are posted. Sign-up for YGAMETIME to access league schedules.

Are there practices? Yes, coaches will schedule one practice between Monday and Friday 3-8pm.

Please note any days you cannot practice on the registration form. We can’t guarantee to accommodate your requests, but we will try. Practice is scheduled based on the coach’s availability.

Can I request a coach, or a friend to be on my child’s team?

No, but coaches will be able to request up to one child.

(Siblings are the only exception to this rule.)

Can I coach a team?

Yes, to make this league possible, we need parents and volunteers to dedicate their time to create a fun experience for everyone. All we ask is your willingness to coach, no prior experience is necessary. Please contact Darin McClelland if interested in coaching, or volunteering in another capacity. (Fingerprinting, volunteer paperwork, concussion & child abuse prevention training required for new coaches.) All training is provided by the YMCA.

What shoes does my child need?

Any non-marking athletic shoes. (No crocs, sandals, or boots)

Is there financial assistance?

Yes, applications must be turned in no later than December 1.
