YMCA Youth Basketball Rules – Updated December 2025
Division: Boys 10
General Updates
Updates will be added here as the season progresses.
League Format
This league consists of four teams, each playing one preseason game against every other team.
Preseason Games:
- January 17
- January 24
- January 31
Official League Games:
- February 7
- February 14
- February 21
Playoffs:
All teams will participate in the playoffs, scheduled for February 28 and March 7.
Game Format
- Duration: Two 20-minute halves with a running clock.
- Clock Stops: For timeouts and injuries.
- Final Two Minutes: Stop-clock will be used if the point margin is less than 10.
Halftime
Overtime
- If tied at the end of regulation:
- 2-minute overtime period.
- Each team gets one timeout during overtime.
- Stop-clock for dead balls and free throws.
- If still tied after overtime, the game ends in a tie.
Timeouts
- One 1-minute timeout per half (does not carry over).
- May be called by a coach or player when the team has clear possession or during a dead ball.
Substitutions
- Occur every 5 minutes; clock continues running.
- Players must be ready to check in promptly at the scorer’s table.
- Free substitution is not permitted.
Playing Time Requirements
- Each player must play at least 20 minutes and sit for at least 5 minutes.
- No player may play the entire game unless exceptions apply (injuries, only five players available, or fouling out before meeting minimum time).
- Playing time will be recorded at the scorer’s table.
Fouls
- Team Fouls:
- After 6th team foul: one-and-one free throw.
- After 10th team foul: two free throws.
- Team fouls reset at halftime.
- Individual Fouls:
- 5 personal fouls = disqualification.
Game Requirements
- Each team must provide one volunteer to assist referees with scorekeeping/timing 10 minutes before game time.
- Minimum of 3 players required to start; maximum of 5 players on the court.
- Only one coach may stand on the sideline and must remain on their designated half.
- Basket height: 10 ft; Ball size: 29.5” official size.
Offense
- Must advance the ball to the front court within 10 seconds.
- Violations:
- 3-second lane violation.
- Backcourt (over-and-back).
- Free Throws:
- Awarded for shooting fouls.
- Players may enter the key once the ball contacts the rim.
- If no rim contact, play is dead and possession goes to the opposing team.
- All violations result in loss of possession.
Defense
- Full-court press allowed unless leading by more than 10 points (then pick up at half court).
- Steals are permitted.
General Information
- Jerseys:
- Reversible jersey must be purchased separately for $13 through Augusta Sportswear.
- All players need a new jersey this season as we’ve partnered with the Los Angeles Clippers for official team jerseys.
Practices
- Coaches will set practice times based on availability.
- Most practices will be held at the Stuart C. Gildred Family YMCA during the week.
Important Dates
- Regular Season Begins: Saturday, January 17
- Picture Day: To Be Announced
- Season Ends: Saturday, March 7
- Make-Up Day: If a game is canceled, a make-up game may be scheduled.
- Teams will play 8 games total.
